MBIP now ranks among the top ten ranking PCT filers in Australia for the period of January 2018 to December 2018. Since no information about PCT filings is available until eighteen months from the earliest priority date this information has only now become available. This is the first time MBIP has entered the list of the top PCT filers in Australia.
1. Spruson & Ferguson (IPH)
2. Davies Collison Cave (Qantm)
3. FB Rice
4. Griffith Hack (IPH)
5. Phillips Ormond Fitzpatrick
6. FPA Freehills (Qantm)
7. Wrays
8. Shelston (IPH)
9. Watermark (IPH) & Madderns
10. Michael Buck IP
Interestingly, six out of the top ten ranking PCT filing firms are commonly owned subsidiaries of either IPH Limited* or Qantm IP Limited and MBIP is one of a select few independent firms to make the cut.
Earlier this year MBIP was listed among the top 10 filers of Australian provisional patent applications, quite an achievement for a firm of our size and reflective of the firm’s strong emphasis on servicing local businesses and inventors.
Founder and Principal Michael Buck said that “MBIP becoming among the top PCT filers in Australia is not entirely surprising because we seem to have edged out much larger Australian firms that mainly focus on work originating from overseas jurisdictions. This is a great result reflecting the firm’s success in attracting highly skilled and experienced attorneys who are helping serve some of Australia’s most innovative businesses”.
Commenting on the latest achievement, Principal Andy Mukherji said that “MBIP has been growing steadily in the last few years and our growth has been underpinned by the growth of our Australian clients. While many of the larger firms that are predominantly going after incoming work have been slipping in the PCT rankings, privately owned firms like MBIP have been able to focus on longer-term client experience instead of focusing on the share price and acquisitions.”
The PCT applications filed by MBIP during the period (Jan 2018 to Dec 2018) relate to a broad spectrum of technologies including mechanical engineering, medical devices and diagnostics, computer science and software, materials science, mining technologies, and chemical technologies. The results were compiled using WIPO’s Patentscope database and the rankings have been compiled by searching for PCT applications with a filing date between 1 Jan 2018 and 31 Dec 2018.
