Jeremy Moller, Principal completed degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). During his studies and then continuing on after the completion of these degrees, Jeremy worked with a small, Brisbane-based engineering consultancy that was responsible for significant work on the Queen Street Busway, for several years.

Jeremy subsequently completed his studies and registered as a patent attorney whilst working at other large Brisbane-based attorney firms, and after four and a half years working in the IP profession Jeremy joined MBIP as an Associate in February 2018.

He was highly regarded and referred to as a “rising star” and “young gun” by several industry commentators. Jeremy was looking for a future that included the possibility of equity partnership, an opportunity that is no longer possible in the publicly listed Australian patent attorney firms.

Jeremy’s excellent technical skills in electrical engineering and high-level patent drafting and prosecution capabilities helped secure his elevation to Senior Associate in July 2019.

In this supportive environment, Jeremy displayed he was adept at business and systems development, and determined to improve internal operation with his work on upgrading the firm’s document management and other admin systems. In recognition of his hard work and dedication to building the firm, he was made a Principal in August 2020.

Why did you decide to become an attorney?

I began studying in 2013 and became registered in 2016.

After working in an engineering role for a time, I realised that I wasn’t going to enjoy being in a specific role or technical area over the long term and began seeking alternatives for applying the skills I had learned when I came across an ad for a trainee role. I really liked the idea of helping innovative people protect their inventions and, ultimately, the interview went well and here we are!

What first attracted you to a career at MBIP?

I had worked at two other Queensland-based attorney firms prior to joining MBIP. I knew I wanted to work at a younger firm where I could contribute my ideas to help grow the business, be given the resources to reach my full professional potential, and progress to an equity Partner role.

What do you like about working in Brisbane?

Brisbane has all the attractive qualities of a big city while still being quite accessible and affordable (sorry Sydney and Melbourne).

There is always a lot going on whether you’re into sports, arts or just want a nice meal, and with the Olympics coming in 2032, there are so many new and exciting developments and projects underway, it’s only going to get better.

What part of your role do you enjoy most?

I love developing a strategy with a client. Each client is completely unique and has their own set of needs and wants that you need to balance with their budget and coming up with a strategy that gets the most for them without being unrealistic and overcommitting them is really rewarding.

Can you give us an idea of the range of clients you work with and the variety of technologies you enjoy the most/are interested in?

My technical background is in electrical and electronics engineering and mathematics and I work with inventors in the mining, electric vehicle and power systems industries.

I really enjoy working on devices and processes that use new algorithms to improve on existing technologies. The rapid growth and advance in robotics, machine vision, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) has been incredibly fascinating and its applications in all different technologies, from improved medical diagnostic and treatment tools to fruit picking and power line fault detection, has been absolutely incredible.

I have always been very interested in space (I wanted to be an astronomer at one point) and recently, with all the excitement around the Australian Space Agency and space exploration, I have taken an interest in space technology and innovation, and particularly satellites, communication systems and electronic devices in space. It’s a really exciting aspect of the law and innovation that I think is going to really take off in the next few years.

What is the most useful advice you’ve been given in your career?

There are quite a few that I recall regularly but I think the best advice I received is to keep your writing simple and concise. You don’t need to be verbose or use the most beautiful language to get your point across.

What do you do when you’re not being a patent attorney?

I have two dogs, Millie and Rocky, and they’re beagles so a lot of time is spent walking them and letting their noses get a workout. They really need the exercise to work off all the treats they eat!

I also really enjoy baking. I know a lot of people find it stressful but following the steps is relaxing, even if it doesn’t work out perfectly every time and it’s a great opportunity to use my hands for something other than typing a patent specification.

If I’m not in the kitchen you will probably find me in the garden tending to my fruit trees. I have been trying to grow a lot of citrus and native fruit trees lately. It’s definitely a work in progress but I was quite excited to pick my first Buddha’s hand fruit this week even if I’m not quite sure how to use it yet. I’m thinking of infusing it into some gin though.
